Wales backs coach Rob Howley has been sent home in the World Cup for an alleged breach of the legislation of World Rugby anti-corruption and covering betting.
The 48-year-old’s death is a blow that is enormous six days in Japan contrary to Pool D opponents Georgia prior to Wales’ opening match.
A Welsh Rugby Union statement said Howley had»returned to Wales to help with an investigation».
The WRU affirmed it had been in relation.
World Rugby’s regulation 6.3.1 reads:»No linked person shall, directly or indirectly, wager or try to bet on the outcome or some other part of any associated event and/or get and/or try to get part or all the proceeds of any such bet and/or any other advantage regarding a wager.»
Wales have already sent to Stephen Jones to fill the gap made by Howley’s surprising death and Jones is forecast to arrive»imminently» at the team’s Kitakyushu base.
Former Wales and British and Irish Lions fly-half Jones has been confirmed as the next Wales backs coach under Wayne Pivac, who’ll take the reins following the championship from Gatland.
The WRU statement said:»Rob Howley has returned to Wales to assist with an evaluation in relation to a possible violation of World Rugby Legislation, specifically gambling on soccer union.
«The choice was required to act immediately in light of information passed to the WRU. As this could prejudice the investigation, no additional details can be offered at this point.
«If needed an independent panel will be made to hear the case. Rob has co-operated completely with our talks.
«Warren Gatland has consulted with senior players along with Stephen Jones will be coming in Japan imminently to join with the squad as attack coach»
As the New Zealander took charge, howley was an integral part of the backroom team of boss Warren Gatland.
Even the ex-Wales and Lions scrum-half was already set to depart his function following the World Cup.
Howley had been connected with all the Italy head coach job with incumbent Conor O’Shea anticipated to leave but that now looks unlikely.
The prior Wales scrum-half was a part of Gatland’s backroom staff since being appointed in January 2008 and was among the backroom recruits, and also played under him at Wasps.
Wales have won four Nations names, including three Grand Slams, since he became a part of the training set up.
Howley was in charge of Wales’ 2013 Six Nations success when Gatland was off on an British and Irish Lions head coach sabbatical.
He was also a part of the winning Cuban coaching team of Gatland in the series in New Zealand and Australia in 2013 four decades later.
Michael Owen, former captain, talking on Five Live:
It’s sad that Rob’s got caught up in this, he’s been a tremendous coach for Wales and this is actually the swansong for your Wales training group. It’s a blow for everybody involved, and also for Rob Howley on a personal level.
I think that the team will be impacted. They’re lucky to own Stephen Jones, he is sway and incredibly optimistic person. He is someone who might come and have a positive impact on the camp right away.
