Ref Watch: Jack Grealish, Harry Kane and Callum McGregor decisions analysed by Dermot Gallagher
After a busy weekend to VAR, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher chooses on the bones from the decisions in the most recent edition of Ref Watch.
The Old Firm derby and also the north London derby equally took center stage over the weekend but that there was lots of controversy with three red cards straight out throughout the Premier League, a angry Norwich supervisor and a new argument brewing where the pub should lie on’clear and obvious mistakes’.
So how was it seen by Dermot? Here’s Sky Sports’ resident ref’s view…
INCIDENT: Henri Lansbury’s aim is ruled out as the referee’s whistle has goneso Jack Grealish can be reserved for simulation. VAR does not give a penalty.
VERDICT Grealish didn’t dive.
DERMOT SAYS:»VAR was utilized partly on this. You need to go backwards on it. Can the referee blow the whistle until the ball was struck by Lansbury? He did, there is no doubt. So there is no way.
«You work backwards, was it a punishment, did Gary Cahill make a foul? The VAR says no and appears at that. I think they’re right, it was not a filthy, which means you default back into the swimmer’s choice which is that Jack Grealish simulated.
«Whether you like it or not, VAR could not do anything about that. All of it defaulted back to Kevin Friend.
«If the whistle had not gone, VAR would have assessed whether the purpose was legal, and also the referee might have said he felt there was a simulation, so I’m going to give that.
«They can assess whether it’s a penalty, but they cannot test simulation. His choice was made by the referee there, it is not the choice I would’ve made but he left it.
«There’s three indications if we wait. You’ll be able to look at Since the referee opted to make his decision when he hit on the floor, that’s the only thing.
«The referee’s mindset is that he has gone over too easily, he’s trying to win a penalty. I thought it wasn’t a dip. I believed Cahill was made contact»
INCIDENT: Harry Kane goes down under a challenge from Sokratis at the final moment in the Arsenal penalty area, against providing a spot-kick, however the Warriors and VAR equally pick.
VERDICT: Right telephone number.
DERMOT SAYS:»For me personally, definitely not a penalty. He moves into him , takes his earth , sees Sokratis and measures across him, if you look. He made this totally perfect, although I thought Martin Atkinson refereed a match in a fashion.
«There is contact there, we aren’t not needing a lot of yellows when contact left but I believe it is not a penalty, that’s the key issue.»
INCIDENT: after having a VAR review he is given a yellow card, although Youri Tielemans seems to stamp on Callum Wilson
VERDICT: Correctly handled based on just what the participant saw.
DERMOT SAYS:»It does not hit the threshold, the bar is set quite large. What shows it’s a card for me, a few people I have spoken to say that isn’t, the very first clip you see, precisely exactly the same angle the referee seesit does not seem a card. During play it didn’t look a reddish.
«I feel that the threshold has to be that everyone’s going to go,’yeah we’re in this camp’.»
INCIDENT: Jonny Evans when both players Opt for a 50/50, the Warriors gives nothing is stood by Jefferson Lerma
VERDICT: card.
DERMOT SAYS:»The referee didn’t see it give a foul. When you notice it, it a yellowish, and a yellow, although the VAR can not intervene. The debate is, is it a card question? When you look in the Tielemans one and that is not given as a red, it’d be quite difficult to provide a red for this.»
INCIDENT: Callum McGregor and Ryan Jack tackles on Scott Arfield and Boli Bolignoli, with force, respectively Ahead Jordan Jones is shipped for Rangers. Neither is booked.
VERDICT: Right telephone number.
DERMOT SAYS:»There’s a few of these. It goes in difficult from McGregor, and as low. The referee actually plays , I think if he stops play he’ll provide a yellow card.
«With Jack, It’s a yellow card in the best. He has gone in tough. Both players are committed, it’s inevitable they’re likely to come back. He gets a small touch on the ball.»
INCIDENT: The ball appears to hit the hand minutes of Isaac Hayden before Fabian Schar scores to equalise for Newcastle, that goes unnoticed by VAR or the referee
VERDICT: Wrong call.
DERMOT SAYS:»It did not have picked up. Because they had been hoping to keep the game and do it as promptly as possible, whether that’s, I do not understand.
«But what it will do, it’s all about manifestation and moving forward it is going to be is it offside, is that there a foul, is there a handball – move through the record, and even if it takes another 10 or 15 minutes then be it.»
INCIDENT: Sebastien Haller not Provided penalty after evident contact at the Norwich box, also the decision Doesn’t overturn
VERDICT: Incorrect decision.
DERMOT SAYS:»I think ti’s a punishment. The ball is the clue, look at it and it goes off. It’s about manifestation, this week, the referees are fulfilling, it might be discussed that the VAR may have got involved.
«It is a continuous process, we’ve said it may take three years to iron out things. I mentioned at the start of the season that it will be a bumpy ride, perhaps that is just where they state it should’ve been »
INCIDENTS: Sebastian Farke is left angered when Haller challenge on Andriy Yarmolenko squat on Tom Trybull both and Christoph Zimmermann go unpunished
VERDICT: either choice would not overturn.
DERMOT SAYS:»About the foul, I believe he could be erroneous to suggest it wasn’t assessed, it may well have been looked at but because the game wasn’t stopped, it’s looked at in play. It is low, it is endangering his opponent or not dangerous. It is certainly not a card.
«It is rather tricky to say it is an elbow . How quickly it happens and if it is skimmed to his chest possibly but I wouldn’t call it malicious or nasty.»
