Gone but not forgotten: Union Berlin remembers deceased fans in moving tribute
(CNN) — Theres a special bond between German football club Union Berlin and its fans and the closeness of that relationship was honored in a poignant way over the weekend as the group made its Bundesliga introduction.
Ahead of Saturdays game against RB Leipzig, Union supporters held up placards of deceased family members together with the inscriptionEdlich dabei (Eventually there).
The deceased were counted in the attendance. The Stadion An der Alten F??rstereis official capacity is currently listed as 22,402, but Saturdays attendance was recorded as 22,467.
The scene, which is the largest football ground in Berlin, was opened in 1920, but has experienced a series of structural modifications over the years the refurbishment and roof of the standing areas between June 2008 and July 2009.
According to the club website, Union fansassembled their own stadium, with over 2,300 volunteers providing 140,000 hours of labor time, helping the Berlin team save millions of dollars.

A collection of enthusiast groups organized saturdays tribute, together with pictures of the departed fans as the club anthem rang out, increased before kick-off. Their tickets expenses had been paid for by fans.
But, the debut into the Bundesliga of Union proved that a demanding one — Leipzig hammered them 4-0.
Last season Union finished third in the second grade of football to make a playoff from VfB Stuttgart.
Marketing and unions subsequent victory watched the club become the first out of the fifth and East Berlin from the former East Germany to obtain passage to the Bundesliga.
