Capitals star Evgeny Kuznetsov banned from international play for four years after he tested positive for cocaine
(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals ahead Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The medication is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Code.
«Recently, the IIHF told me this, because of a positive test for a banned substance, I’d be suspended from international competition for four years,» Kuznetsov said in a declaration. «I have made the decision to accept this penalty. Representing my country has been so close to my own heart and something I take in pride. Not being able to put that sweater on for four years is extremely tough to take.»
Kuznetsov is going to probably likely be ineligible for four decades, together with his suspension. He had been suspended on June 13.
«We know of the positive test outcome and related international sanction that’s been imposed on Evgeny Kuznetsov,» that the Washington Capitals stated in a declaration. «We’re disappointed with this development and take this occurrence seriously.
«In addition, we’re devoted to ensuring that he has the essential support necessary to operate through this situation.»
Cocaine isn’t regarded as a performance-enhancing drug from the NHL and is not prohibited under the Performance Enhancing Substances Program of the NHL.
«We understand that Mr. Kuznetsov has sought help through the education and counselling program provided for in the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement and has agreed to some normal testing protocol relating to his involvement with that application,» NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly says that Kuznetsov has agreed to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, on whether any additional actions are required, which no conclusions have been made.
«I have disappointed so many people that are important for me, including my family, teammates and friends,» Kuznetsov said. «In the first day I took the ice in D.C., » the Washington Capitals organization and our fans were nothing but good for me and my loved ones. I feel horrible for letting you down. I realize that the only way I will win you back is to take possession of my situation as well as my actions from this point forward.»
