Jamie Hughes: I can shock Michael van Gerwen at World Grand Prix

Jamie Hughes thinks he could jolt Michael van Gerwen at the World Grand Prix following a year that owes much to remaining in occupation. After he operated in 2018 at the Challenge Tour, his big break came as 2019 dawned – the Englishman sealing his PDC tour card at Q School in January thanks to a highly effective display. He has never looked back since. In June, he scooped his PDC title, beating Stephen Bunting in the Darts Open which ensured him a place in the World Matchplay. Hell have taken heart although he glanced at the first round dropping 10-7 to finalist Michael Smith. The isnt lacking confidence despite being drawn against the worlds greatest player in the first round of the Grand Prix of Sunday, going into his important. It is quite a short format really, first to two sets, he told The Darts Show Podcast. Its essentially like a Pro Tour, you have got to win legs. That is the way I am looking at it. Its quite a brief format. If I could hit the ground runninginto it early , I can lead to a big upset. He does not have any motive to lack perception. The confidence has always been there, however, [the Czech Darts Open name ] proved not just to myself to everybody else just how much of a danger I am when Im playing well, he continued. If anything, it added a bit more pressure, since theres a little more expectation. I am likely seen as a potential winner of Euro Tours today since I have already won one. Players must acclimatise into thedouble-in format of the World Grand Prix in Dublin, but it wont unsettle the most popular BDO World Championship semi-finalist. I have played most of my darting career in double-in championships, in lower leagues, so Ive a lot of experience, Hughes said. I dont try and do anything else [in training]… I simply carry on using the exact routines. Im a tiny creature of habit. I like to get into great routines, and I think thats more important. You can throw away the form book out the window a little bit when you do mix up things. It [the format] differs. The players arent likely to be in that regard in shape. It likely will be easier for audiences to freshen things up a bit, because it will seem like the exact same type of players playing on the TV the whole time, therefore it might freshen this up with a few more upsets in case it did spice up things a bit. For Hughes, he will revert to form – . While many players opt to commit to the oche,Yozza has remained in employment. Because he proceeds to rise through the ranks staying busy has worked a deal for him. His game was never suited by playing fulltime. I did try it before, about 12 months before I changed [to the PDC], he clarified. It didnt work really, and it was a lot of darts. There was not anything actually [else]. It had been 24/7. This was a little bit too intensive. That is the reason why I went back to work. I wished to take my head off the game. I was placing myself under a lot more pressure because I was putting much more time in, expecting to have far more out. That wont necessarily work like that. Ive found my game popped up when I started working . It is one of those sort of functions. You need to balance it. You matches and need to provide yourself a great rest time as well as obtaining the clinic in, and of course the travelling. If you have the balance right, then amazing. I think the balance is not too bad at the minute. Hughes knows what works for him, and he has no shortage of belief. Hell be looking to show exactly what hes capable of in the days in Citywest.
